Sick Leave

Regulation 28 (Annex K) states that a police officer is entitled to six months full pay whilst on sick leave in any one year period. This is a continuous rolling period. After this, the officer will go onto half pay for a further six months. After twelve months an oficer's pay will cease.

However, these periods can be extended at the discretion of the Chief Constable.

PNB Circulars 03/2 and 05.1 give the full guidance to chief officers on this issue but in most cases the Chief Constable will take into account the nature of the illness, whether the absence is due to an injury on duty or the expected length of sick leave expected before a return to work.

It is always adisable to contact your local Federation representative or Federation office if you believe that you are likely to be absent from work for more than six months.

Court appearances whilst on sick leave

If an officer is on certified sick leave he or she can still be required to attend at court unless the certification prevents them from doing so.

Travelling expences and resonable subsitence may be claimed and receipts should be produced in this event.
